President’s Column: ASCLA Leadership Meeting Sparks New Ideas and Directions

ASCLA Leadership met at the Midwinter meeting in Denver on Saturday morning to discuss trends in the profession and new ideas, directions and opportunities for the Division. Roundtable discussions facilitated by Ann Joslin, State Librarian, Idaho Commission for Libraries launched ASCLA’s planning efforts. Timing could not have been better, as ALA is also beginning its work to develop a new 2015 strategic plan.

A message to ASCLA members from the Executive Director
No Comments »Recently I made the very difficult decision to resign from my position as Executive Director of ASCLA. An opportunity to do association management consulting came available and it is just right for me. Still this was far from an easy decision. Over the two years I have served, I have come to know many ASCLA members and appreciate even more the work you all do. From my previous work in ALA I was aware of ASCLA’s commitment to accessibility, to funding for libraries and to library legislation, to resource sharing and to continuing education but over the past two years I’ve had the priviledge to see that commitment in action and it is inspiring. You do important and valuable work and I will always treasure the opportunity I had to work with you and assist where I could.

New York library student honored by Maybelline New York and People Magazine for her work with the city’s incarcerated youth
No Comments »Educator, library student, and ASCLA member Jessica Fenster-Sparber was one of the ten honorees at the 2008 Maybelline New York Beauty of Education dinner, held at the historic New York Public Library in Manhattan. Fenster-Sparber is a library coordinator who works with the city’s incarcerated youth as well as the CEO of Literacy for Incarcerated Teens (LIT), the only non-profit organization that raises money to fund the building of libraries and literacy programs in New York City’s juvenile detention centers.

“Senior Spaces,” the Library Place for Baby Boomers and Older Adults

The “silver tsunami,” is near! The population throughout the United States aged sixty and older is projected to grow substantially in the near future as the baby boomer generation (those born between 1946 and 1964) reach retirement age. In 2000 there were 1,443,800 New Jerseyans aged 60 and over. By 2025, it is projected, that the NJ population will number over 2.5 million in this age group. While the current US national average for those over the age of 60 is 13.5%, New Jersey already has over 17.2% of the population over 60, and this it is expected to grow to 23.6% by 2025.
