The purpose of the State Library Agency Section is to develop and strengthen the unique role and functions of state library agencies in providing leadership and services that foster and improve the delivery of library services. To stimulate the continued professional development of state library agency personnel in discharging their unique functions in such areas as statewide planning and evaluation, services to state governments and legislatures, services to local libraries, services to users with special needs, etc.

Discussion groups are Consultants for Service to Children and Young People, LSTA Coordinators, and State Library Consultants/Library Development.

Message from 2008-2009 Chair:

I'm looking forward to working with SLAS members for a productive year. I met some new SLAS members at the ALA Conference, and listened to their good ideas for what they would like to gain from membership in SLAS. Mainly, State Library staff are looking for others to share ideas and views on working within state agencies to provide excellent library services and programs. I was also able to participate in the LSTA Coordinators discussion group, and to visit the Children's & Young People's Consultants group. Please know I and the executive committee would be pleased to hear from all members. I'm hoping to make good use of the tools available on the new ALA web site, including this wiki, to foster more discussion among SLAS members.

We are working on plans for a program at the 2009 ALA Conference to focus on the impact of the LSTA program, and trends and developments. Himmel and Wilson are conducting a study for IMLS of the LSTA five year evaluations and new five year plans recently submitted by states, to identify trends. They have agreed to share their results. We will also have a panel to present aspects of new programs underway in states. Please contact me if you would like to work on the program planning.
