Greetings ASCLA!

We are inundated daily with election rhetoric during this primary and caucus season.  I am going to ask for your indulgence to encourage you to complete your ALA ballot, your ASCLA ballot in particular.  ASCLA has a slate of dedicated volunteers who have agreed to run for positions this year and further the goals of our division.  Thank you to Nominating Committee members Carol Desch, Mimi Lee, Anne B. Craig, Sharon Rawlins, and Martha Van Pelt for their work this year.

At our leadership meeting during Midwinter, the co-author of Shackleton’s Way, Stephanie Capparell, discussed the ill-fated expedition, the techniques and methods Shackleton used to boost morale, and Shackleton himself.  We were encouraged by the thoughtful examples of his leadership under extreme adversity and reflected on how we apply these principles to our leadership roles within ASCLA and in our daily lives.

During Midwinter, ALA Council approved a resolution brought forth by our Division Councilor Chris Corrigan on the importance of accessibility for all members of ALA during conferences.  You can read the adopted resolution here: http://bit.ly/1X6r64V  A task force has been established to make recommendations to Council.  We will be closely following the work of the task force and I am heartened to see the quick action by Council leaders to continue the accessibility discussion.

I am looking forward to seeing many of you at the ALA Annual Conference in Orlando!

Cheers,

Rhonda K. Gould

2015-16 ASCLA President
